A Question of Faith

Based on a Netflix Original

It’s 3:20 am and I have work to do hence the staying up late but guess what? Instead of giving my work a 100% commitment I watch a movie. At first thought, I thought it would be a typical cliche Christian movie but in the end, I learned a lot.

While Eric was in the hospital and the doctor had predicted that he would not make it, I said to myself “that is impossible.” I mean it is God we talking about and He can work miracles and wonders. But then He didn’t wake up and I began to get worried and completely connected with the pain Pastor Newman and his family went through.

Through moments of low, we begin to question our faith. We ask ourselves if there is really a God or if He really cares. I want to reassure you that it is pretty normal for us humans to question our faith regardless of our spiritual journey but in those times in our lives, we have to say to the devil, ‘not today, not ever! Get out!‘ The devil uses times like these to lie to us and make us turn our back away.

Few things I learned from the movie:

  1. Forgiveness: We need to be able to forgive those who have hurt us no matter how hard it can be. One thing I know about forgiveness is that it releases you from a bondage grudge and hatred put you in. You become free and your mind is burden free. Pastor Newman and his family had to forgive Maria Hernandez to be able to move on with life.
  2. Gratitude: John focused on all the wrong things going on in his life that he didn’t realize how much he truly had. He let all the outside pressure wear on him that all he expressed only anger and became a distasteful man. His only daughter was unsure if he truly loved her. We need to start appreciating and thanking the Lord every day for the blessings we have. Like they say, “you don’t know what you have till you lose it.”
  3. Pride: Pride can prevent us from experiencing God’s favor in our lives. When David and John first met, they both weren’t ready to accept one another and put aside any egoistic nature. But when they rethought their actions and made up, we see blessings coming to them. John got the money he needed to pay off his debt and David got the project done by a good contractor.

In the end, I remembered this Bible verse; ‘ In the same way I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born,” says the Lord. “If I cause you the pain, I will not stop you from giving birth to your new nation,” says your God.’ (Isaiah 66:9 NCV)

Today, let’s make an effort to focus on God and the good things He has done in our lives. In the midst of what we are going through, let’s make a conscious effort to talk to God and spend time in His word.

Happy New Month!!

You are Enough!!

Nothing seems to be going right in life. You spent your last $5 on coffee only to have someone bump into you on your back to class and spill the entire thing on you. Now you have no $5 nor the coffee and your fit is a mess. You get a C on the hardest class you had to take this semester and your parents look down on your effort and compare you to your sibling/friend/cousin. You have no job yet you have to pay your rent, buy gas and eat.

Today, I want you to know that you are more than these circumstances going on in your life. It may not look it, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Jesus loves you and because He loves you everything is going to be okay. Your bills would be paid, your grades are going to be a lot better, your health is going to improve and your relationship is going to be restored.

Some of you may think, “I don’t go to church, I don’t pray, I don’t believe He is real.” Regardless of what you think or do, Jesus still loves you. He loves you and is waiting for you to come home to Him. He loves you because you are alive, not because your life is perfect.

Live your life today knowing you are loved despite your excesses and flaws. Live today knowing that tomorrow is going to be better. Get off that floor, shower and take on the day positively and happily. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, you are enough for God and yourself.

Prayer Point: Lord, I thank you that you love me regardless of what I do or where I am at today. I ask for forgiveness and I ask that you come into my heart today to change the way I think and do things. Help me understand that I am enough and I do not need to do anything for you to love me.

Purpose

Purpose- “the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc” (Dictionary.com)

Your purpose in life is the meaning of your existence and without identifying your purpose, life becomes hard and almost meaningless. Although knowing your purpose is important, not everyone knows their purpose. I want to reassure you that it is okay to not know your purpose, but I can’t because that would be a terrible thing to do.

Many people interpret purpose as a career path or profession. Your career or profession is the ‘what’ or ‘how’. Your purpose, on the other hand, is your ‘why’. Your purpose is the reason behind your existence, your career is how you can make this reason possible. Some people think your purpose can be accomplished through different career paths. For example, if your purpose is to help people save money, you can do that by either becoming a banker, working in the health policy sector to advocate for affordable health care or providing free services to people. No matter which path you choose, you are saving people money!

In this life full of hatred, we are prone to meeting people who would use derogatory terms like “you are useless“, “you don’t matter“, “you are an accident” to bring us down. But, knowing that you are created with an intention, you would look them in the face and say, “that is a lie!“. Purpose is the key to your success and happiness in life. Your purpose is the blueprint for your life. It helps direct your path and prevents time-wasting. Now, I am not saying that knowing your purpose makes your life journey easy and rosy, but rather it makes the journey smoother and less bumpy.

Every purpose involves time, people and places. To successfully achieve your purpose you need the right people who would help you along the way through advising, financial help or emotional support. You also need to be in the right places at the right time. These three things are the core of making your blueprint a success.

Your purpose may seem impossible for you to achieve considering the circumstances surrounding your life, but never be discouraged. Every person was given the right amount of strength and grace to fulfill their purpose. I like to think to myself, ‘if your purpose does not scare you, then think again’. You should be amazed at the great things you are bringing to this world. The best use of your time and resources is a good way to fulfill your purpose. Today, make a decision to not focus on what you have done wrong and cannot change but the things you can do right to move forward.

Bible Verses On Purpose:

  1. Psalm 139:13- “For you created my innmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb”
  2. Romans 8:28- “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose”
  3. Ecclesiastes 3:11-“He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end”.
  4. Jeremiah 29:11- “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'”
  5. Ephesians 2:10- “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”

All Bible verses are from the New International Version (NIV).

Prayer Point: Lord, show me this purpose I need to fulfill as I walk this Earth. (gotten from christianstt.com)
